I mentioned I'd do Asgore's reaction to his hands before and while this isn't quite that, it's close enough, anyway. Gaster has a lot of reasons for doing what he's doing - this would be one of them. Gaster this is the exact opposite of what Asgore would have wanted.

Gaster's emotionally invested in Asgore (and Toriel for that matter, although he currently thinks she's dead) and completely unobjective when it comes to either of them, thus why he ignores the fact that Asgore's killed quite a few people by this point and has vowed to destroy the human race and all. A bit like how the brothers refuse to process insults, haha. Maybe that's where they got it from!
You'll see why he's so invested later, most like.
