If its the handplates Gaster I can see why its so heartbreaking -IIRC He was already experiencing growing dread as number of captured souls grew because of that versions history of the human inflicted genocide of all skeletons but him, meaning to be set free also means he and everyone he has left to care about will be facing creatures his only personal experience of was terror and death.
PLUS Asgores standing plan of war. Plus Asgore having no excuse left not to absorb the souls and never be the same again.
And Gaster is the one giving that last soul to his dear friend to enable that.
