As he said once, these kind of moments just make things harder for everyone.

While you can see a glimpse of the quiet times Papyrus is talking about in the one where they're growing up, he's really referring to the many silly one-shot joke comics set during their childhood. While those exact silly things may not have happened, Gaster did leave them in the room with him a lot while he was working, and he did spend a lot of time with them teaching them things and interacting with them. Which is partly why he came so close to choosing mercy way back when.

Sans has extremely mixed feelings about that memory of Gaster, as you can probably guess.
Once Papyrus was not afraid to approach Gaster when he was angry or frustrated - how things change.

We last saw Papyrus's picture back after Gaster attached the plates! It's been a while.
The next one's going to be important and also probably really long blegh

Edit - A lot of people wanted to see the smiles in question, so here you go, haha.

Something like this, anyway.

If Gaster did decided to pick mercy, I think he would actually be a pretty good dadster, I mean he would have quite the explanation to do to Asgore, but I think it would also help Asgore in a way, might even make him a little happier, a ray of light in his dark past
