Help I'm too young to die by zarla Help I'm too young to die by zarla
Someone was wondering about how Gaster would react to being tickled and I ended up going off on this tangent. Toriel this is a good way to scare a kid to death.

Now if Toriel were to try comforting her confused skeleton might scare him more.
Nicely done.

I wonder, could you tickle a skeleton? Probably not, considering they're made of bone. And most of them are dead, so...

I know right?! The characters are so real! The story itself is so unique yet makes use of the average rising action, climax, falling action so well! And don't get me started on the ending twist...

Yes! Glad someone else agrees! I Felt that the main character was really relatable, especially as a kid! But the antagonist was always my favourite.

That might actually explain the whole thing. It is not that his parents or society were calous, but skeletons didn't invent tickling cause it doesn't have same effect on them as on mammals or similar beings.

I think it is less sad than culture or parrents that don't provide these joys even if the said joys are available, on purpose, as if prohibiting them.

I feel ya there, Gaster. Except now tickling fills me with a murderous rage instead of panic attack (well, it's a mix of both)

I find it understandable. Especially if one came too often into contact with someone who would take tickling past comfort zone.

I've heard that the reaction to being tickled is basically a panic attack, so his reaction here makes sense.

I'm not sure who to feel more bad for--Gaster for apparently being raised in such an environment that he doesn't even understand the nature of a common, harmless child's game, or Toriel for getting herself into such an embarrassing situation. ^^;

Smol Gaster is so adorable though. It feels kind of weird when you then think about what he's like once he grows up.

Toriel acting in a way that reminds me of myself...

I mean, when you love children, would love to have some of your own running around one day, and in turn try to make children around you happy? Sometimes you don't always catch things that you later would after having spent more time with kids and/or have had children of your own.

In the pioneering nuclear age of the 1900s, several studies were conducted concerning the scientists involved in nuclear science. A common trend developed. When interviewed and surveyed, many of these scientists had fathers who died early in their son's life, or were emotionally reserved, away from home due to work-related causes, didn't spend time with their sons, were unsupportive of their sons' interests/activities, or remained distant from their sons. The fathers of these scientists were described as cold, reserved, emotionally void, and very busy with their work. The scientists themselves were socially awkward, excelled in science and math yet failed in other areas of academics, showed little desire for human relationships, became obsessed with their passion for their projects, and although they were devoted wholeheartedly to their field of science 24-7, they lacked interest in social interactions with their fellow human beings, and distanced themselves to a point most didn't even keep track of world events, their attentions only focused on science. These scientists worked tireless hours, and were known to share a common physique as well as a common upbringing and mentality. Most of them were thin, lanky, yet never seemed tired, always searching for answers concerning their scientific obsessions. Despite all the risks involved in nuclear testing, weapons, and power-plants, their curiosity drove them to do things despite these risks.

"It might blow up Chicago? Let's do it and hope not..." This mentality was seen repeatedly, such as in the development of Chernobyl. Despite all the dangers, hope and curiosity led to the creation of these weapons, many of which had serious consequences if something went wrong. Luckily, most experiments were fruitful, but not all of them. I'm not saying I am against nuclear weapons or support them. It's just history.

Such an example makes me wonder just what kind of upbringing Gaster had. Though his past traumas no doubt play in to his outlook on humans and his psychological state, there seems to be something missing within him. He feels weak if he becomes emotional, thinks it wrong to appear vulnerable/weak in front of others, isn't fond of children, considers things on a logical, scientific scale, and doesn't seem to have had a proper childhood. Though only a hypothesis, it could very well be possible his father (or both parents), weren't as close to him, or weren't the type to show parental love. One or both of them may have been reserved and distant towards him, and looked down upon his child-like innocence to a degree that Gaster began to feel asif he had to appear stronger and maintain a professional image in front of others. If Gaster's parents acted in such a way towards him as a child, it would explain his lack of affection and understanding towards children, and explain his ease of abuse towards Sans and Papyrus, who both exhibit child-like qualities. Gaster's scientific obsession overrides all social interaction with the skelebros, Alphys, Asgore, and others. No matter how much they care for him, and no mater how much he may care about them, he hides his projects and works long, tireless hours, his obsession driving him to do terrible things for a supposedly greater cause that will bring about the greater good through such sacrifice...yet it is a success he can't be certain of, nor a solution acceptable by the majority of society. The parallels are striking. The fact that he doesn't understand the harmless act of tickling, and is instead alarmed, only shows he perceives things based on instinct and lack of the childhood concept of fun.

As if all he's gone through was bad enough. His childhood could very well have been just as dreadful...

Consequently, it would be cool to see a Zarla comic of a young Gaster and his relationship with his parents (and other family members, one of which I imagine would wear the labcoat Gaster comes to wear himself. Perhaps it was his father's? Or a brother's?).
